The Copa Argentina kicked off properly on Wednesday evening as the Primera sides got involved and although Independiente edged past San Telmo in Formosa, there was an upset in Sarandí where Primera B side Almagro knocked out Colón.
Oscar Altamirano’s late goal was enough to see off their Primera opponents and register the first shock of this year’s tournament. Colón have not been in the best of form and have been distracted by off-field problems but defeat to Almagro is a bitter blow to the club.
Mauricio Pellegrino named a full strength side for Independiente’s clash with lower league San Telmo and despite dominating for much of the game had to settle for a nervy 2-1 win. Leandro Fernández gave El Rojo a half time lead and when Claudio Aquino doubled the advantage after the break, it appeared as though the Primera side would cruise into the next round. However, an error by Martín Campaña allowed Nahuel Oviedo to pull a goal back almost immediately and cause concern for Pellegrino. His side held on to progress to the next round but it was a performance that will have done little to ease the pressure on the under-fire coach.
