Argentinos Juniors were a minute away from pulling off a remarkable escape act after sealing a 2-0 win away to Atlético Rafaela on the final day of the Transición but Renzo Spinaci’s injury time winner for Sarmiento turned the tables and condemned Los Bichos to the Nacional B.
After a dire 2016, Argentinos Juniors’ survival was out of their hands coming into the final round of fixtures but to even stand a chance, Raúl Sanzotti’s side had to pick up what would be only a second win of the season. In Rafaela, Los Bichos did just that with two goals in the opening stages of both halves. Damián Batallini provided the dream start in the Nuevo Monumental and Juan Manual Cobo eased the nerves with a header moments after the break.
Simultaneously, Caruso Lombardi’s Sarmiento were toiling in Bahía Blanca against Olimpo and heading into injury time with the scores still level, a relegation playoff between El Verde and Argentinos Juniors looked likely.
However, creeping into the second of three added minutes, second half substitute Renzo Spinaci slotted in a winner and ensured Sarmiento would remain in the Primera for another year. Survival represents another success for relegation expert Caruso Lombardi but comes as a bitter blow to Argentinos Juniors.
Atlético Rafaela 0 – 2 Argentinos Juniors
Olimpo 0 – 1 Sarmiento
