There were no further upsets on Thursday in the Copa Argentina as Primera sides Arsenal and Banfield both booked their places in the last 32 with victories over lower league opposition.
Arsenal were made to work hard for their win over Primera B side Talleres de Remedios de Escalada in Temperley and it took a stoppage time winner from Ramiro Carrera to avoid the tie going to penalties. Walter Ortiz had given the Talleres an early lead but it was swiftly cancelled out by a scrappy Franco Bellocq equaliser. Arsenal will face either Atlético Tucumán or Defensores de Belgrano in the next round.
Banfield also left it late against Defensores de Belgrano de Villa Ramalla in Sarandí but thanks to Gonzalo Bettini’s 90th minute winner, El Taladro escaped a potentially embarrassing defeat. Julio Cesar Falcioni’s side await the winners of Godoy Cruz against Estudiantes de Buenos Aires.
Arsenal de Sarandí 2 – 1 Talleres de Remedios de Escalada
Banfield 1 – 0 Defensores de Belgrano de Villa Ramallo
A tip of the cap to Walter Erviti for his Riquelme-esque nutmeg during the game….
