This year’s Copa Argentina last 16 is complete and while the presence of Nacional B side Almagro may come as some surprise, Rosario Central could be considered among the favourites. However, Eduardo Coudet’s side also required penalties to see off the challenge of Atlético Rafaela following a controversial 2-2 draw in Santa Fe.
Central took a first minute lead when debutant Fabián Bordagaray slotted past Lucas Hoyos but La Crema were level soon after through Robin Ramírez. The drama came after 36 minutes when Mathias Abero clearly appeared to bundle the ball into the Central net with his arm but while the Canalla players raged, the goal stood and Atlético led.
Perhaps only fairly Germán Herrera equalised shortly after half time and with neither side able to snatch a winner the tie was forced to penalties. Both sides scored their first but with Sebastian Sosa saving the next two, Teodoro Paredes’ miss ensured that Central would progress to face Deportivo Morón.
Earlier in Sarandí, Almagro booked their place with a penalty win over Deportivo Laferrere following a 1-1 draw. Second half goals from Armando Lezcano and Oscar Altamirano had left things all square and it was Almagro that held their nerve in the shootout. Two badly miscued efforts from Laferrere flew high over the bar sparking celebration for El Tricolor.
Deportivo Laferrere 1 – 1 Almagro (3-4 on penalties)
Rosario Central 2 – 2 Atlético de Rafaela (3-1 on penalties)
