Juan Sebastián Verón has never strayed far from the pitch since his retirement in 2014 but on Sunday afternoon the Estudiantes club president made his playing return for Estrella de Berisso in the Liga Amateur Platense.
If the inclusion of the former Copa Libertadores, Premier League and Serie A winner wasn’t enough the 41-year-old popped up with a decisive 81st minute goal to give Estrella de Berisso a 1-0 victory over San Lorenzo de Villa Castells.
Verón was due to make his debut last weekend but the torrential rain in Buenos Aires saw the game cancelled and it wasn’t clear if the current Estudiantes president would be available on Sunday due to club commitments overseas.
However, Brujita did dust off the boots and and coach Cristian Serrano was looking for his class in central midfield, he ended up with a centre-forward style headed goal to take all three points.
“I don’t know how I got in the position but the ball found me there and I was like [Martín] Palermo,” joked Verón.
“Now we will reconsider my position with coach.”
The coach is Cristian Serrano, who works with Verón at Estudiantes, editing videos for the coaching staff and the former Manchester United and Lazio midfielder explained that he signed for the club after being invited by his club employee.
How often Verón will be available remains to be seen but the Estudiantes icon stressed, “I feel good physically and I haven’t stopped training.”
