Franco Niell proved once again that despite his small stature he is a real danger in the air and the 33-year-old’s wonderful looping header gave Gimnasia a valuable win over Patronato in Paraná.
Rubén Forestello’s side had an excellent record in the Estadio Presbítero Bartolomé Grella during the Transición and despite having the better of their opening game this season it was El Lobo that took the points. Niell will take the headlines with his match-winning contribution but Alexís Martín Arias was outstanding in the Gimnasia goal. There are bigger tests to come but Gustavo Alfaro’s stamp is now surfacing and it’s two wins from two for El Lobo.
Later in Parque Patricios, Huracán were unable to see off the spirited challenge of Quilmes but will rue the error by Marcos Díaz that allowed the visitors to lead. Poorly positioned the 30-year-old goalkeeper allowed Federico Andrada’s tame effort from outside the box sneak past him despite getting a good hand to the ball and El Globo weren’t able to turn things around.
Defender Luca Sosa did equalise midway through the first half but it failed to set up a real grandstand finish and it ended 1-1. The result represents a decent away point for Quilmes but Huracán are obviously still missing the presence of Ramón Abila in attack and after defeat on the opening weekend would have hoped for three points on Friday.
