It is fair to say that Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side didn’t exactly struggle in the absence of Sergio Agüero following his recent ban but the Argentina striker wasted no time on his return to give a clear reminder of his talents. The 28-year-old has been in sensational form since the arrival of Guardiola and his brace against Swansea on Saturday made it five Premier League goals in four matches.

Agüero’s first was a wonderful first touch and drilled finish through the legs of Lucas Fabianski and his second a delightful panenka penalty and while it ensured City’s 100% record continued, Guardiola ominously said that he thinks there is still more to come from the Premier League’s in-form hitman.

Giovanni Simeone marked his first Serie A start with a goal in Genoa’s 1-1 draw with Pescara. The 21-year-old signed from River Plate this summer and showed no signs of being overawed by the occasion as he rifled in the opener goal shortly after half time. A late equaliser denied Diego Simeone’s son a match winning contribution but it is an good early sign for the young striker.

The other Argentine news in Italy was another injury to Lucas Biglia, who lasted just nine minutes of Lazio’s win over Empoli. The midfielder is undergoing tests but could be facing another couple of months on the sidelines.

Biglia will be joined by Atlético Madrid’s Augusto Fernández after the former River Plate and Vélez midfielder suffered a complete tear of his anterior cruciate knee ligament. The 30-year-old missed a large part of last season with a knee injury but could now miss almost the entirety of this campaign.

The injury came as an early blow to Atleti who needed a second half Antoine Griezmann goal to defeat Deportivo La Coruña following a superb goalkeeping performance from Germán Lux.

However, it wasn’t all bad news – Sergio Araujo scored a late equaliser for Las Palmas to deny Real Madrid victory and ensure that Zinedine Zidane’s side weren’t able to extend their lead at the top of the table. The 24-year-old has had to settle for a role from the bench but made the most of his opportunity on Saturday to earn a valuable point for Los Amarillos.

Alexander Szymanowski is not a name that leaps to mind when thinking of Argentine footballers in Europe but the Buenos Aires-born winger was on target for Leganes in their defeat to Valencia on Sunday. The 27-year-old headed the home side in front but after the visitors had turned it around, Szymanowski missed the chance to equalise when he saw his penalty saved by Diego Alves.

In Ligue 1, former Banfield defender Renato Civelli notched a late consolation for Lille in their 3-1 defeat to Saint Etienne. The lanky centre-back’s deflected volley pulled a goal back and looked like it may set up a dramatic finish but Lille added a third in stoppage time to wrap up the points.

Former River Plate defender Emanuel Mammana put in an assured display despite Lyon falling to defeat away to Lorient and the supporters at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais are already raving about the 20-year-old.

Another Argentine on target in defeat was Nantes’ Emiliano Sala, whose early goal in the Stade Velodrome wasn’t enough to earn victory over Marseille. A Bafetemi Gomis penalty eventually gave all three points to the home side.

The well-travelled former Rosario Central striker Pablo Vitti scored twice for Greek side Veria as they beat Panionios 2-1 on Saturday and in Switzerland Matías Delgado set Basel on the path to victory over St Gallen. The Swiss champions were trailing before the 33-year-old swept home a brisk counter attack and eventually ran out 3-1 winners.

Moving away from Europe and two recent Argentina internationals were both on target. Lucas Pratto is currently in Edgardo Bauza’s plans and came off the bench to score a sensational goal in Atlético Mineiro’s 3-1 win over Internacional. All of the 28-year-old’s tenactity was on display to keep the ball alive on the edge of the box before he showcased his superb finishing ability to find the top corner.

Federico Mancuello hasn’t featured for La Albiceleste since under Gerardo Martino but the former Independiente captain curled in a dramatic late winner for Flamengo as they came from behind to beat Cruzeiro.

Liga MX brought more goals and incident and we start at the Estadio Nemesio Díez where Toluca drew 1-1 with León. Mauro Boselli have La Fiera an early lead away from home but Pablo Barrientos was again on target for Los Diablos Rojos. The former San Lorenzo midfielder levelled the match with an exquisite backheel into the net.

Sunday’s other match also had Argentines scoring for both sides but it was Tijuana that emerged victorious and took top spot in the table with another three points. River Plate academy product Guido Rodríguez was outstanding for Defensa y Justicia last season and has continued that form with Tijuana this term. The 22-year-old is proving to be one of the signings of the season in Liga MX and he nodded Los Xolos in front. Santos captain Carlos Izquierdoz equalised but Milton Caraglio set up Avilés Hurtado for the winner.

Tijuana went top after Tigres were held to a goalless draw by Cruz Azul following Guido Pizarro’s late sending off.

Argentina World Cup winner Ricardo La Volpe returned to management this weekend with his first match in charge of Club América and although it was far from a convincing performance, Las Aguilas defeated Pumas in the Estadio Azteca. William Da Silva netted the winner after good work from Silvio Romero.

Franco Jara scored from the spot in Pachuca’s win over Queretaro and Marcelo Barovero had a weekend he will probably want to forget after his goalkeeping error allowed Chiapas to snatch a 2-2 draw against Necaxa.

Two Argentinos found the net in the United States’ MLS this weekend but both ended in defeat. Diego Valeri scored for Portland Timbers in their 3-1 defeat to Houston Dynamo while Luis Solignac headed Chicago Fire’s only goal in a heavy defeat to New York City FC.

In Chile, Juan Ignacio Duma scored in Huachipato’s 4-1 win over Cobresal and Alejandro Camargo struck the only for Universidad de Concepción in a 2-1 defeat to Antofagasta.

While in Ecuador, Maxi Barreiro found the net for Delfin in their 5-2 loss to El Nacional, Damian Diaz rifled in the only goal of the game from distance in Barcelona’s 1-0 win over Deportivo Cuenca, Luis Escalada opened the scoring for Universidad Catolica in their 1-1 draw with Mushuc Runa and Daniel Neculman added the second for River Plate in their victory over Fuerza.

And finally in the Chinese Super League, Walter Montillo converted a decisive penalty with fifteen minutes remaining to hand Shandong Luneng victory over Beijing Guoan.
