Suspension has meant Boca have been without Carlos Tevez in the league but the striker returned to the side for Wednesday night’s Copa Argentina clash with Lanús in Mar del Plata and proved decisive in dragging Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s side into the quarter-finals.
Current league champions Lanús have been struggling of late but needed just four minutes to take the lead against Boca. Diego Braghieri flick on from a deep free-kick found Román Martínez and the midfielder slid in to force the ball past Guillermo Sara.
With a bit of needle prior to the game over the scheduling of their league games and players speaking to the press it was a feisty affair but one that El Granate were probably shading. However, minutes after half time Boca were level thanks to Carlos Tevez well placed shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Another set-piece on the hour mark led to Lanús retaking the lead, though this time Braghieri himself volleyed the ball into the net, but Carlos Tevez immediately cancelled it out. Dario Benedetto’s initial effort was saved and the former Juventus striker smashed the ball over the line.
The tie was forced to penalties and Boca goalkeeper Guillermo Sara was the hero. Two big saves while his teammates successfully converted all their efforts meant Santiago Vergini slotting in the fourth handed Barros Schelotto’s side victory. A repeat of last year’s final against Rosario Central awaits Boca in the quarter-final.
