It’s still early to be talking about title candidates but Estudiantes further displayed their credentials with a hard fought victory over San Lorenzo in Bajo Flores. Los Cuervos had been in Copa Sudamericana action in midweek but were unbeaten in the league and the winners would not only remain unbeaten but would go top of the table.
Young Lucas Rodríguez got El Pincha off to the perfect start after 10 minutes when he beat Mathias Corujo to Facundo Sánchez’s low cross and smashed the ball past Sebastián Torrico. However, Diego Aguirre’s side were level before the break thanks to Sebastián Blanco’s superbly executed curling shot into the bottom corner.
With the match delicately poised San Lorenzo saw Franco Mussis sent off ten minutes after half time and it handed the initiative to the visitors. With the man advantage, Israel Damonte was left unmarked in the penalty area and the veteran midfielder headed in Jonathan Schunke’s speculative ball into the box.
San Lorenzo pushed for an equaliser but couldn’t find a way past Nahuel Losada leaving El Pincha to claim an impressive away win and move two points clear at the top of the table.
Later in the Estadio Monumental José Fierro, Atlético Tucumán twice pegged back Boca Juniors to earn a deserved 2-2 draw and extend Los Xeneizes winless away run to ten matches.
Cristian Pavón fired Boca ahead after only three minutes when Guillermo Sara released Carlos Tevez with a quickly taken goal kick allowing the former Argentina international to square for the youngster but the visitors rarely looked in control.
Luis Rodríguez had a goal disallowed before Fernando Zampedri volleyed El Decano level on the stroke of half time and although Pavón would reestablish the lead minutes after the break, Juan Manuel Azconzabál’s side would continue to stretch their guests.
Cristian Menéndez came off the bench to equalise with a towering header and the home side later had another goal chalked off for offside but neither side could muster a winner.
