River Plate were under a degree of pressure after three Primera matches without victory and though it was far from vintage stuff from Marcelo Gallardo’s side the league’s leading scorer, Sebastián Driussi ensured that Los Millonarios returned to winning ways.
The home side had been the better side but a combination of wasteful finishing and decent goalkeeping by Marcos Díaz had ensured the scores were still level until just after the hour mark. Unquestionably one of the stars of the season so far, Driussi found a yard of space at the back post from a River corner and headed in from close range.
The goal proved to be enough but Huracán remain in deep relegation trouble and will look back ruefully on Diego Mendoza’s glaring miss ten minutes from time. Federico Mancinelli was sent off in stoppage time but the game had already been lost and Caruso Lombardi must find a way to end the game of six games without a win.
In Mar del Plata, Vélez Sarsfield held on for what may prove to be a valuable point against Aldosivi after having Maxi Caire sent off during the first half. El Tiburón would have hoped to take advantage and claim only a second league win of the season but instead had Joel Acosta red carded with fifteen minutes remaining and settled for a fifth goalless draw. With a point both sides remain hovering just above the drop zone and in need of wins to pull themselves away.
