After Copa Sudamericana elimination in midweek, San Lorenzo were in need of a boost but a resurgent Boca Juniors were in no mood for charity and instead extended their unbeaten run to ten with a 2-1 win in the Nuevo Gasómetro.
Both sides had fashioned chances in the opening exchanges but the deadlock was broken in the 21st minute when Darío Benedetto produced an exquisite lob over Sebastián Torrico. Los Cuervos needed a response but found themselves two-down in a matter of minutes when Walter Bou, who had only just replaced the injured Benedetto, pounced on an error by Nicolás Zalazar to poke the ball into the net.
Fernando Belluschi pulled a goal back in first half stoppage time but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Boca held on for an important three points. Having waited nine months for an away win, Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s side have now chalked up back-to-back wins and are just four points behind league leaders Estudiantes.
In Junín, Sarmiento suffered a set-back in their hopes of avoiding relegation after Santiago García snatched a late point for Godoy Cruz meaning El Verde remain firmly in the drop zone.
El Tomba had lost every match on their travels this season but led early when Nicolás Sánchez drilled the ball in off the underside of the bar from close range. However, Guillermo Cosaro swiftly equalised with an indirect free kick some yards from the goal and when Leandro Díaz struck a second in the 78th minute it appeared the visitors were heading for another defeat.
With minutes remaining, Santiago García levelled from the spot and claimed a first away point of the season for Godoy Cruz but Sarmiento remain in deep trouble.
