If talk before the clásico de Avellaneda had both coaches under pressure then Independiente’s Gabi Milito will find himself under intense scrutiny after his side slumped to a 3-0 defeat to fierce rivals Racing.
Ricardo Zielinski will certainly have bought himself more time in the Cilindro after La Academia produced one of their best performances to punish a woefully below-par display from the visitors.
When Lisandro López blasted the ball past Martín Campaña from 25 yards midway through the first half, Gabi Milito was unable to say that it hadn’t been coming after El Rojo had been second best from kick off.
Independiente supporters would have been praying for an improvement after the break but instead they found their team two-down within two minutes after Nicolás Figal gave the ball away on the edge of the penalty area and allowed Gustavo Bou to double the home side’s advantage.
El Rojo never posed a threat and the more pertinent question appeared just how humiliating Racing could make it. When Lisandro López thumped in a penalty with 25 minutes remaining, the answer looked as though it could be very, but with a foot off the gas, La Academia simply strolled to a 3-0 win.
The three-goal difference is the first time that Racing have won a clásico by such a margin since 1968 and so the future for Gabi Milito with Independiente looks very unclear. Eleven games in and Independiente are ten points off the lead, sit down in 13th and more importantly are looking increasingly clueless.
