On a wet evening in Santa Fe, Maxi Rodríguez celebrated his 200th appearance for Newell’s Old Boys with a 90th minute winner against Colón. La Lepra continue to surprise this season and their latest three points has closed the gap to league leaders Estudiantes to just two poinst.
Colón have proved a difficult side to breakdown this season and having conceded just four goals prior to the visit of Newell’s, it was perhaps not surprising that the visitor’s opener had a huge slice of luck. A loose ball at a corner kick was cleared against Sebastián Prediger and it cannoned off the midfielder and into the net.
El Sabalero levelled through Ismael Blanco’s first half penalty and just as it looked like Paolo Montero’s side would frustrate another opponent, Maxi Rodríguez popped up with a winner. Newell’s countered swiftly and Eugenio Isnaldo’s low cross found the former Argentina international at the back post to slide the ball past Jorge Broun.
Tigre bounced back from their first defeat in seven games last weekend to record a straight forward win over Quilmes in Victoria. Carlos Luna nodded the home side in front just after the half hour mark before the ever-impressive Alexís Castro quickly doubled the lead with a close range finish.
The points were wrapped up when Federico González ran clear to thump the ball past César Rigamonti in injury time and while Tigre continue to impress, Quilmes are still nervously looking at results around them in the descenso table.
