Despite their excellent home form this season few would have predicted Banfield ending Estudiantes’ unbeaten run last weekend but on Saturday afternoon, El Taladro proved it was no flash in the pan with an equally impressive win over Newell’s Old Boys in Rosario.

Diego Osella’s side started the day in second and had dropped only two points in the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa so were understandably favourites. However, despite being the brighter, La Lepra were unable to find a way past Hilario Navarro and were ultimately punished.

Santiago Silva was the provider and on both occasions his crosses from the left found Nicolás Bertolo. The returning midfielder headed in the opener after 74 minutes and shortly after wrapped up the points with a tap-in from yards out. Julio César Falcioni is already an iconic figure in Banfield but the experienced coach has been responsible for a dramatic improvement since last season.

A little earlier in Parque Patricios and Caruso Lombardi’s future as Huracán coach hangs by a thread after another defeat leaving El Globo precariously above the relegation zone with one win in twelve. Iván Torres gave Colón a first half lead when his firmly struck cross caught Marcos Díaz unaware and flew into the net from an acute angle but Huracán will feel they had the chances to get something from the game.

Rodrigo Depetris equalised seconds after half time but between a miraculous Jorge Broun save and a missed penalty by Javier Iritier, El Globo found a way to suffer another defeat. Cristian Bernardi came off the bench to put Colón ahead on the break and in stoppage time, Nicolás Leguizamón finished off a delightful passing move.

Sebastián Beccacece suffered an agonising defeat on his debut as Defensa y Justicia coach but bounced back to oversee only a second win of the season for El Halcón. The three points eased relegation fears but made Atlético de Rafaela’s descent all the more probable. La Crema have been decent in the Monumental but were unable to find a way back following Leonel Miranda’s superb looping header after 28 minutes.

Huracán  1 – 3  Colón

Atlético de Rafaela  0 – 1  Defensa y Justicia

Newell’s Old Boys  0 – 2  Banfield
