There was very little love lost in Mar del Plata on Tuesday evening as Boca Juniors came from behind to claim an entertaining 2-2 draw with San Lorenzo.
Seven yellow cards and a late sending off for Boca’s Santiago Vergini were evidence of the needle but Mauro Vigliano’s refereeing performance was far from perfect.
It was his harsh penalty call in the opening minutes that perhaps set the tone and with San Lorenzo rightly angered by the adjudged trip on Sebastián Pérez by Néstor Ortigoza it allowed Fernando Gago to slot in the opening goal.
Nicolás Blandi nodded in an equaliser before the break and youngster Bautista Merlini put Los Cuervos ahead shortly after the restart. The 21-year-old had been an early substitute after Fernando Belluschi picked up an ankle knock but showed no nerves as he dashed clear to beat Axel Werner in the Boca goal.
Boca were not behind for long and Walter Bou continued to press his claim for a regular starting role with a low, drilled shot into the bottom corner.
