It wasn’t the one-sided victory that Racing enjoyed in Salta a week ago but Diego Cocca’s side still earned a morale boosting win over rivals Independiente on penalties when the two sides met in Mar del Plata on Monday.

Racing were the better side in the opening 45 minutes and Independiente relied on the talents of goalkeeper Martín Campaña to remain level.

However, Ariel Holan will have been pleased with the improvements his side made after half time and were it not for the wasteful finishing of Diego Vera, El Rojo would have clinched victory.

Instead the game ended goalless and penalties were required to separate the sides. Domingo Blanco had the chance to win it for Independiente but blasted high and wide leaving the youngster in tears and ultimately Racing triumphed.

Nery Domínguez making his Independiente debut saw his effort saved by Agustín Orion and Santiago Rosales slotted in the winner.
