The marathon of preseason in Argentina continued on Friday evening as River Plate edged San Martín on penalties in San Juan.
Emanuel Dening volleyed the home side ahead on the stroke of half time and despite Marcelo Gallardo handing Ariel Rojas his second debut at the club and welcoming Marcelo Larrondo back from injury, River struggled to get back on level terms.
Even after Dening had been shown a second yellow card before the hour mark for an elbow on Arturo Mina.
Rodrigo Mora had hit the post earlier but in the 90th minute finally forced an equaliser when Nacho Fernández squared for him to tap in from close range.
River were perfect from the spot in the shootout so Augusto Batalla’s two saves handed Gallardo’s side the win.
