A third consecutive draw for River Plate as they conclude preparations for the league restart next week but just as Marcelo Gallardo’s side they have been previously, penalties were decisive in beating Independiente Rivadavia in Mendoza.
After a goalless first half it was the home side that took the lead when Sergio Sosa finished off a sweeping break from close range. However, the striker’s joy was shortlived as his decision to remove his shirt in celebration earned him a second yellow card.
Gallardo decided to introduce recent signing Carlos Auzqui in place of Sebastían Driussi and with his first touch the former Estudiantes forward forced the ball into the net from Marcelo Larrondo’s knock down.
Unable to find a winner the match went to penalties and with River converting all five of their efforts from the spot, Augusto Batalla’s save from Hernán Encina proved enough.
