In the Maltese Premier League, former Newell’s striker Maxi Velasco scored in Valletta’s win over Sliema, Ignacio Varela and Enzo Ruiz were both on target for Floriana in their 2-0 win over Pembroke and Miguel Alba scored for Birkirkira in the 2-2 draw against St. Andrew’s.
The Ukrainian league got back underway after their winter break and Shakhtar Donetsk continued to dominate at the top but needed an injury time Chucky Ferreyra winner to beat Vorskla Poltava.
Switching continents now and Tijuana retook top spot in Liga MX after a 2-0 win over Monterrey. Juan Martín Lucero’s near post finish opened the scoring before a trademark Ignacio Malcorra free kick wrapped up the points for Los Xolos.
Toluca’s defeat to Puebla meant Los Diablos Rojos dropped to second but Pablo Barrientos was still on target for the home side. His penalty reduced the deficit but proved nothing more than a consolation while Gabriel Hauche contributed a candidate for miss of the year.
Pachuca climbed to third thanks to Franco Jara’s winner against Veracruz deep into stoppage time.
Atlas also rose up the table after a 2-0 win over struggling Club León with Matías Alustiza opening the scoring just after half time.

And veteran striker Emanuel Villa scored a second half goal in Querétaro’s 4-3 win against Pumas.
In Chile, Temuco came from two-down to claim a draw against league leaders Colo Colo with Lucas Campana blasting in the equaliser twenty minutes from time.
Audax Italiano climbed to third in the table after a 3-2 win over Huachipato. Marcos Riqulme and Nicolás Ferreyra both on target in the win. O’Higgins earned a second victory of the season with goals by Cristian Insaurralde and Fabricio Fontanini in a 4-1 win over Cobresal and San Luis picked up a first win of the season with victory against Santiago Wanderers – Alejandro Fiorina opening the scoring in a 3-0 win.
Former Racing striker Valentín Viola scored for Independiente Medellín in a 3-0 win over Tigres in the Colombian top flight and in Ecuador, Hernán Barcos scored a brace for Liga de Quito in a 4-0 win over River Plate.
In Venezuela, there were goals for Gustavo Britos (Metropolitanos), Emiliano López (Atlético Venezuela) and Javier López (Mineros) and in Peru, former Independiente youngster Cristian Ortíz scored a wonderful free kick for Sporting Cristal.
And finally in Paraguay, Pablo Mouche scored his second goal for Olimpia in a draw with Guaraní, Martín Gimenez netted a hat-trick for Sol de América against Cerro Porteño and Alfredo Cano was on target to General Díaz.
