Argentina under-17s suffered the embarrassment of first round elimination from the Sudamericano before even kicking off against Brazil on Saturday evening after Paraguay’s earlier win over Peru but did little to redeem themselves against the Selecao with a third defeat of the tournament.

Two defeats against Venezuela and Paraguay left Argentina needing a win against Peru in the penultimate game and although Los Pibes managed that, their fate was no longer in their hands.

A win against Brazil would have made no difference but for the third time in four matches, Miguel Micó’s side couln’t find a goal and so Brenner’s powerful finish on the hour mark and Yuri Alberto’s late finish were enough to inflict another defeat.

Unable to even reach the final stage, there will definitely be no place at the World Cup, but this latest failure at youth level is another example of Argentina’s diminishing power at this level.

Argentina  0 – 2  Brazil
