Atlético Tucumán will certainly feel they did enough for at least a point in Montevideo but El Decano were instead on the end of a 2-1 defeat to Peñarol, which leaves them with plenty to do in group five.
Cristian Menéndez had headed Pablo Lavallén’s side in front on the hour mark but a deflected Lucas Hernández free kick gave Peñarol a fortuitous equaliser.
A minute later and the home side led after Gastón Rodríguez ran almost unchallenged from halfway and eventually allowed Mauricio Affonso to slide in the second.
Atlético surged forward to try and salvage something but a man of the match display from goalkeeper Gastón Guruceaga denied the visitors any points.
A difficult away trip to Bolivian club Jorge Wilstermann lies ahead for El Decano and defeat would make qualification complicated. Atlético currently sit bottom of the group on one point and have ground to make up.
