After a testing few weeks for San Lorenzo, Diego Aguirre’s side were in need of a positive result and although for 75 minutes it looked as though Quilmes would frustrate the home side, Los Cuervos eventually broke the deadlock and ran out 3-0 winners to join Boca Juniors at the top of the table.
The relief was clear when Ezequiel Cerutti drilled San Lorenzo ahead at the back post in the 76th minute and almost immediately the result was put beyond doubt when Ezequiel Ávila dashed clear to double the lead.
Deep into stoppage time and Ávila repeated the trick only this time to roll the ball across for Nicolás Blandi to slide in a simple third.
Despite the talk of crisis and pressure on Diego Aguirre, the result leaves San Lorenzo level on points with league leaders Boca Juniors and still a very real title contender.
In the Estadio Florencio Sola, Banfield responded to the two straight defeats suffered since the Primera restart with a 3-1 win against Unión.
Lucas Gamba had nodded the visitors into an early lead but it didn’t last long and after having goals disallowed in each of the two previous matches, Darío Cvitanich finally got his name back on the scoresheet since his return to the club. The 32-year-old turned on the edge of the box to fire the ball past Nereo Fernández.
Banfield were on top and midway through the first half led, when Cvitanich turned provider, sliding a through ball into Nicolás Bertolo, who slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
The points were wrapped up after the break when Emanuel Cecchini tapped in the third following Bertolo’s badly miscued finish.
Rosario Central chalked up a second consecutive one-nil win thanks to Teo Gutiérrez’s smart second half finish against Tigre.
Goals are still not exactly flowing for El Canalla but the early signs of improvement under Paolo Montero are showing and Central should start climbing the table.
Banfield 3 – 1 Unión
Rosario Central 1 – 0 Tigre
San Lorenzo 3 – 0 Quilmes
