After last weekend’s defeat to Talleres and San Lorenzo drawing level at the top on Saturday afternoon, Boca Juniors needed a result and thanks to Cristian Pavón and Ricardo Centurión they got that against San Martín.
Pavón came under a little criticism for his wasteful performance against Talleres but fired Boca ahead with a sensational goal on Sunday. The 21-year-old cut inside onto his right foot and unleashed an unstoppable strike into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.
San Martín remained a threat and had come close thanks to a couple of defensive lapses but shortly after half time, Ricardo Centurión doubled the lead, calmly finishing off a swift counter.
Emanuel Dening ensured a nervy end to the game when he headed a goal back in the 88th minute but Boca held on and restored their three point advantage at the top of the table.
A little earlier in Santa Fe and Colón caught Lanús cold to snatch three points after Facundo Pereyra slotted in the game’s only goal with barely a minute on the clock.
El Granate were strangely flat and never really looked like getting anything from the game. Despite losing Iván Marcone to international duty with Argentina at short notice, Jorge Almirón will be disappointed with the reaction of his players after the defeat to River Plate last Tuesday.
Colón 1 – 0 Lanús
San Martín 1 – 2 Boca Juniors
