Independiente managed to find the back of the net on Friday evening but were still left frustrated as Vélez Sarsfield came back to earn a point in the Estadio Libertadores de América.
A bright start, full of attacking intent by Ariel Holan’s side was rewarded by a wonderful free kick by Emiliano Rigoni. The 24-year-old was the standout player on the pitch and his strike from the tightest of angles was an outstanding way for El Rojo to end their goal drought.
The home side should have made their superiority count but having not played last weekend appeared to fall away badly after half time and Vélez, still angry about a first half penalty not given, forced an equaliser. Juan Manuel Martínez forcing home a rebound for his first goal since returning to the club.
Neither side could find a winner but Vélez will certainly be the happier in the circumstance; Holan is aware that his Independiente side will take time.
Kicking off fifteen minutes earlier, Gimnasia claimed an impressive 1-0 win away to Atlético Tucumán.
A fine passing move was finished with an excellent clipped finish by Nicolás Mazzola midway through the first half and that was enough for all three points.
El Lobo have now won five consecutive matches in the Primera and conceded just once during that run, taking Gustavo Alfaro’s side up to fifth.
Atlético Tucumán 0 – 1 Gimnasia
Independiente 1 – 1 Vélez Sarsfield
