Atalanta’s remarkable season and push for European football continued on Sunday with a 5-0 win over Genoa. Captain Alejandro Papu Gómez was once more at the centre of the victory and celebrated a hat-trick in the demolition.
The 29-year-old is enjoying his best ever campaign and following Andrea Conti’s spectacular bicycle kick opener, Papu added the second from the penalty spot.
After half time, the former Arsenal and San Lorenzo forward scored twice from close range to wrap up the three points and take his season tally to an impressive fourteen.
Edgardo Bauza has still overlooked Gómez in spite of his form and Atalanta’s lofty fifth place in Serie A but perhaps a potential coaching change for La Albiceleste could see Papu make the step up.
