Finding the net has proved immensely difficult for Independiente for at least a year but Ariel Holan’s side took it to another level on Tuesday night in their goalless draw with Alianza Lima.
Emmanuel Gigliotti was forced to relive his famous penalty miss for Boca Juniors against River Plate as the striker saw a tame first half effort saved by man of the match, Leao Butrón but El Rojo had a host of chances after the break to almost end the tie.
The Peruvian side posed more of a threat before the break and Martín Campaña was called into action on a couple of occasions but between Gigliotti’s miss and a thoroughly dominant second half display, Independiente will be hugely frustrated to be heading to Lima at the end of May level.
Martín Benítez was certainly the most culpable in front of goal but it is far from the first time that El Rojo are left to rue missed chances. The one plus point for Ariel Holan was the performance of Ezequiel Barco, who made a strong claim for a permanent role in the starting eleven.
