Just as they did when they lifted the Copa Libertadores in 2014, San Lorenzo have left themselves plenty to do in order to reach the knockout stages after a 1-1 draw in Santiago against Universidad Católica.
Since winning the competition, San Lorenzo have been eliminated in the group stages every year and although they are not out of it yet, sitting bottom of Group Four at the half way point it is a long road back.
Following defeats to Flamengo and Atlético Paranaense, Los Cuervos needed a result in Chile and for 45 minutes that didn’t look in doubt.
Nicolás Blandi’s header gave Diego Aguirre’s side a half time lead but in truth it should have been more and the home side punished San Lorenzo’s inability to not put the result beyond doubt.
Much improved after the break, it took only four minutes for former River Plate playmaker Diego Buonanotte to fire an equaliser into the bottom corner.
Neither side could find a winner but the point leaves San Lorenzo four points adrift of the Chileans in the second qualifying position. The return fixture in Bajo Flores at the end of the month is absolutely critical.
