Mauro Icardi scored his first Derby della Madonnina goal in Serie A’s early kickoff on Saturday and it looked to have given Inter Milan victory over their city rivals but a late rally from AC Milan produced a thrilling 2-2 draw.
Antonio Candreva had already volleyed Inter ahead when Icardi exchanged passes with Ivan Perisic to double the lead before the break.
Inter’s captain had previously not scored in the famous derby but his 21st league goal of the season looked to have secured the points until Alessio Romagnoli pulled a goal back in the 83rd minute.
Deep into injury time, AC Milan threw everyone forward and Cristian Zapata just forced the ball over the line despite some desperate defending to salvage a 97th-minute point.
A little later and Juventus’ celebrations over a 2-0 win against Pescara were cut short by an ankle injury picked up by Paulo Dybala.
Gonzalo Higuaín scored twice from close range in the first half to take his season tally to 23 and secure the three points that take Juventus a step closer to a sixth straight scudetto but Dybala is now a doubt for the Champions League second leg against Barcelona.
