After two consecutive defeats Estudiantes were in desperate need of three points when Copa Libertadores champions Atlético Nacional visited the Estadio Único on Wednesday evening and thanks to Javier Toledo’s first half goal, El Pincha did just that.
The reigning champs are a shadow of the side that lifted the trophy last July but having also lost twice already needed a result and still proved difficult opponents for an Estudiantes side still trying to claw back their best form.
Juan Sebastián Verón was again in Nelson Vivas’ midfield and it was the 42-year-old’s free kick that created the only goal of the game. Franco Armani got down well to deny Verón but when Facundo Sánchez’s rebound flew back off the crossbar, the ball bounced off Toledo and into the net.
President Verón was withdrawn around the hour mark to a standing ovation and his relief was clear when the full time whistle was blown and El Picha were back in the mix in group one.
Estudiantes travel to Colombia to face Atlético Nacional in a couple of weeks before the critical matches against Barcelona and Botafogo.
