Lionel Messi’s greatness has never been in doubt but on Sunday afternoon the five-time Ballon d’Or winner added another highlight to his remarkable career with a match winning brace against Real Madrid to blow the title race wide open.

Not only that, but Messi reached the spectacular milestone of 500 goals for Barcelona with his injury time winner and at 29 years of age there is no telling how many more the Argentina captain could add.

It has taken 577 matches for Messi to notch 500 and aside from being Barcelona’s and La Liga’s record goalscorer, his first on Sunday saw him overtake Alfredi Di Stéfano as the leading scorer in El Clásico history.

The records are too many to count and they continue to tumble.
