Former Boca Juniors playmaker Luciano Acosta’s talent has never been in question and on Sunday afternoon the 22-year-old tormented Atlanta United to help DC United to a 3-1 win.
After weathering an early storm and falling behind to a Kenwyne Jones header, DC United clawed themselves level thanks to an own-goal before Acosta’s low shot found the bottom corner.
Acosta’s trickery continued to pose a problem for Gerardo Martino’s side and it was his defence-splitting pass that released Sébastien Le Toux for DC United’s third.
Sebastián Blanco scored his first goal for Portland Timbers but it wasn’t enough for victory as FC Dallas twice came from behind to claim a 2-2 draw.
Fanendo Adi had put the Timbers ahead but a terrific strike from former Newell’s Old Boy’s forward Maxi Urruti pulled the home side level. Blanco forced Portland back in front with a well-taken finish from inside the penalty area but Tesho Akindele ensured a share of the points.
And finally, Federico Higuaín scored his second goal of the season with a superb left-footed volley but couldn’t prevent Columbis Crew falling to a 3-2 defeat against New York City FC.
