Champions Tigres took an important step towards a playoff position with an impressive 3-0 win over Tijuana on Saturday.
Jesús Dueñas slotted the home side in front before former Belgrano forward Lucas Zelarayán smashed in the second. The talented 24-year-old was in excellent form and it was his inswinging freekick which ended with Juninho volleying in a third goal before half time.
Tijuana remain top of the table but the victory lifts Tigres into the eighth and final playoff position.
Matías Alustiza scored his eighth goal of the season to jointly lead the Liga MX scoring charts but more importantly handed Atlas a memorable victory over Club América in the Estadio Azteca. The visitors had already raced into an early lead when the 32-year-old drilled in the second after quarter of an hour.
Pachuca may have just lifted the CONCACAF Champions League title last week but the Tuzos dropped out of the playoff spots after a 2-2 draw with Cruz Azul on Saturday. Franco Jara scored the crucial goal to lift the Champions League trophy on Wednesday and the former Arsenal striker opened the scoring against Cruz Azul. The visitors turned the match round and were heading for victory before veteran goalkeeper Conejo Pérez headed a dramatic equaliser.
Club León’s hopes of a playoff spot took a hit after a draw with Chivas but it might have been worse were if not for Mauro Boselli’s equaliser five minutes from time.
And finally, Argentinian-born, Paraguayan international Jonathan Fabbro scored a delicate chip in Chiapas’ 2-2 draw with Santos Laguna.
