Temperley claimed a huge victory over Racing on Saturday evening to boost their hopes of survival after jumping out of the relegation zone while seriously harming La Academia’s title hopes.
Racing’s five-match winning streak had seen Diego Cocca’s side emerge as serious contenders but having been weakened by the injury to Lautaro Martínez in training, the visitors found themselves behind with barely a minute on the clock when Mauro Guevgeozián headed in completely unmarked.
The visitors responded well and should have been level but for a terrible Gustavo Bou miss, that would normally be dispatched with ease by the in-form striker.
Instead, on the stroke of half time, Temperley extended their lead and it was an unstoppable long range effort from Leonardo Di Lorenzo that left Agustín Orion no chance.
Desperate for a way back into the game, Bou rattled the crossbar and Cocca introduced Lisandro López, after his injury layoff, but neither could pull a goal back. Piling players forward, it was the hosts that wrapped up the points when Guevgeozián tapped in a third.
El Gaselero are out of the drop zone with the win but Racing could find themselves nine points behind Boca Juniors on Sunday evening, a deficit that could prove too much with only eight rounds remaining.
Finally in Santa Fe, Unión were held to a goalless draw by Patronato but will look back on Emanuel Britez’s saved penalty and feel that they had the chances to claim the victory.
