Under Alejandro Sabella, Ezequiel Garay was arguably Argentina’s best defender and the 30-year-old may well still be, so his lengthy absence from the international scene is something of a mystery for a side so short of options in central defence that Martín Demichelis has remained in the squad until recently.

On Sunday afternoon, Garay scored twice to set Valencia on the path to a 4-1 win over Osasuna and while his goal scoring is not what will earn him a recall, his overall performances in La Liga will surely put the former Newell’s defender back in contention for Argentina’s next manager.

Garay’s opener in the Mestalla was a relatively straight-forward tap in but his second on the stroke of half time showed his ability on the ball as he burst into the penalty area to sweep it into the net first time.

It was while still with Zenit St Petersbury that Garay fell out of favour with Argentina after withdrawing from at least one squad through injury but when fit, there is no doubt that he remains one of the better alternatives.
