There are few bigger matches in world football and while the superclásico might dominate the headlines, in the football crazed city of Rosario there is only one clásico. The red and black of Newell’s Old Boys and the blue and yellow of Rosario Central dominate the city and split it in two so derby day is as intense as it is spectacular for the neutral.
Sunday’s meeting will be no different with Newell’s mounting something of a surprise title challenge and Central, having rediscovered form under Paolo Montero, desperate to throw a spanner in the works.
El Canalla are also out for revenge after dominating the fixture in recent years only for Maxi Rodríguez to score an injury time winner in the Gigante de Arroyito earlier this season. The former Argentina international described it as the greatest moment in his career, not only as it fired La Lepra near the top of the table but ended a ten-match winless streak in the clásico, a run that went back to 2008.
Newell’s have José San Román ruled out so youngster Franco Escobar starts at right back but Diego Osella names a settled starting eleven that will be well organised, look to keep things tight and then break through Maxi Rodríguez and Mauro Formica.
Facundo Quignón provides a vital role in La Lepra’s possession and initiating attacks and Ignacio Scocco rediscovered form gives the cutting edge.
Central have also needed to make changes to the back four with Víctor Salazar and Cristian Villagra both ruled out meaning Hernán Menosse comes in at left back. Marco Ruben returns from his suspension to partner Teo Gutiérrez in attack and the duo look the most likely to cause the home side problems.
