Victory for Lanús on Wednesday evening would have all but confirmed their place in the Copa Libertadores last 16 but a late Luiz Otavio header for Chapecoense stole all three points for the Brazilians leaving Group Seven finally balanced ahead of the final round of matches.
However, the drama didn’t end at full time when it became immediately apparant that Chapecoense’s match winner was supposed to be serving a three-match ban for his red card against Nacional in the previous match.
Chapecoense’s president has since stated that CONMEBOL only notified them of the suspension informally and so decided to start Luiz Otavio but understandably Lanús will be appealing the result.
Wellington Paulista had nodded the visitors ahead in the first half but Pepe Sand looked to have rescued a point from the penalty spot ten minutes from time.
For now at least Luiz Otavio’s 87th-minute header has given Chapecoense the win and left El Granate needing a result away to Nacional next week but that could all change once CONMEBOL review what has happened.
