Banfield are enjoying a terrific season and hopes of Copa Libertadores qualification remain high after a 3-1 win over Temperley on Saturday afternoon.
Only Boca Juniors have won in the Estadio Florencio Sola this season and although Temperley are scrapping for every point available in the relegation battle, the visitors found themselves two-down at half time. Nicolás Bertolo headed El Taladro in front and the impressive Emanuel Cecchini doubled the lead a minute later with a low shot from distance.
Mauro Guevgeozián volleyed a goal back for Temperley but Banfield quickly extinguished thoughts of an equaliser when Claudio Villagra rifled in a third. The result lifts Julio César Falcioni’s side into fourth ahead of a difficult run-in while Temperley remain adrift in the relegation zone.
A little earlier in Santa Fe, Gimnasia ended a run of five straight defeats to already leave Colón’s club record-breaking winning streak as something of a memory.
Iván Torres had slotted the home side ahead in the first half but Nicolás Ibañez scrappily poked Gimnasia level on the hour mark before benefitting from a dreadful attempt by goalkeeper Jorge Broun to dribble the ball out from the back that resulted in a simple tap-in.
