At 37 years of age Pepe Sand shows no signs of slowing up just yet and after signing a new one-year deal with Lanús this week, the veteran striker fired a hat-trick as El Granate thrashed Sportivo Barracas in the Copa Argentina.
A woeful pitch in Formosa may have made things difficult for the Primera champions but two early goals from Sand had Jorge Almirón’s side in control virtually from kick off. Emanuel De Porras did pull one back for the Primera C side but simple goals from Matías Rojas, Sand’s hat-trick tap-in and Matías Sánchez wrapped up a comfortable win.
Atlético Tucumán were made to work much harder for their place in the last 32 and were indebted to goalkeeper Cristian Lucchetti after a penalty shootout victory over All Boys in Salta.
Maximiliano Salas’ deflected strike looked to be sending the Nacional B side through but Luis Rodríguez’s 81st-minute penalty forced the tie to penalties. Lucchetti saved two before stepping up to score his side’s fourth and send El Decano through.
Earlier in Quilmes, a Fernando Coniglio volley was enough for Olimpo to edge out Ferro Carril Oeste.
Olimpo will face either Racing or Mitre in the next round; Atlético Tucumán take on Independiente and Lanús will play either Unión or Nueva Chicago.
Olimpo 1 – 0 Ferro Carril Oeste
Lanús 5 – 1 Sportivo Barracas
Atlético Tucumán 1 – 1 All Boys (4-1 on pens)
