After the joy of making his Argentina debut against Brazil on Friday, José Luis Gómez has suffered a knee injury during training in Singapore and looks set for at least two months on the sidelines.
The 23-year-old limped out of the session on Sunday and after an MRI scan, the medical team have now confirmed that Gómez has ruptured the meniscus in the left knee, ruling him out of Tuesday’s friendly against Singapore.
Aside from coming as a blow to the player and Argentina, Lanús will sorely miss the attacking full-back with three rounds of the Primera season remaining and Copa Libertadores qualification still up for grabs.
Gómez’s marauding talents from right-back have been clear to anyone who has watched Lanús over the past 18 months and in his international debut, the youngster provided Argentina with some useful width.
Sampaoli may well have wanted to take another look on Tuesday and certainly going forward, Gómez is a realistic option at right-back.
