There was no margin for error if Independiente were to move closer to their dream of returning to the Copa Libertadores but ahead of another cup final against Lanús on the final day, El Rojo earned the win over Unión that made them the masters of their own destiny.

Emiliano Rigoni scored either side of half time to put Ariel Holan’s side firmly in control and Lucas Albertengo volleyed a third in the closing stages to make sure of the points.

Independiente climb into the fifth and final Copa Libertadores spot, knowing that victory over Lanús in Avellaneda on Tuesday will mean a return to the tournament that means so much to the club.

A little earlier in Tucumán, Vélez earned a 1-1 draw against Atlético. A superb solo goal from youngster Matías Vargas put the visitors ahead but unable to see out the first half Guillermo Acosta smashed in a stoppage time equaliser.

Atlético Tucumán  1 –  1  Vélez Sarsfield
