River Plate stars from past and present turned out in front of a packed Monumental on Saturday evening to pay tribute to retired club icon Fernando Cavenaghi.
The likes of Javier Saviola, Pablo Aimar, Marcelo Gallardo, Ariel Ortega and Enzo Francescoli all started alongside more recent River starts Manuel Lanzini, Matías Kranevitter and Gabriel Mercado as supporters welcomed back some of the most successful players in the club’s history.
Cavenaghi may never have realised his enormous potential with Argentina or in Europe, barring a spell with Bordeaux, but was an outstanding goalscorer for Los Millonarios and aside from helping the club back into the top flight in 2012, lifted four Primera titles, the Copa Sudamericana and the Copa Libertadores in 2015 before his retirement.
The match itself was as friendly as a friendly could be with goals flying in at either end but for River supporters it provided a wonderful occasion to honour Cavegol.
