Seven years ago Chacarita Juniors suffered defeat to Racing Club and with it slipped out of Argentina’s top flight. On Sunday afternoon, Los Funebreros drew 1-1 with the already crowned Nacional B winners Argentinos Juniors and the result secured promotion for the one-time Primera champions sparking wild celebration.
The 46-round Nacional B season had come down to the final match with Chacarita and Guillermo Brown competing for the spot alongside Argentinos Juniors in the Primera.
Victory would have guaranteed Chacarita’s place, as they held a two-point lead over Brown de Puerto Madryn, and while Walter Coyette’s side couldn’t manage that against the visiting Bichos, a draw down in Chubut between Brown and Boca Unidos meant the point was sufficient.
Gabriel Heinze’s Argentinos had made it an uncomfortable opening half hour thanks to Javier Cabrera’s opener but a Rodrigo Salinas penalty before the break not only took the striker to the 30-goal mark for the season but crucially restored parity.
Argentinos Juniors came close after the break to ruining the party but Chacarita held on for the point and with news from Puerto Madryn that Brown had failed to win, Los Funebreros had done it.
No one could doubt Argentinos Juniors place back in the top flight but on the balance of things, Chacarita are a worthy part of the new 28-team Primera next season.
