It may only be preseason but with every passing friendly Edwin Cardona further endears himself to Boca Juniors supporters. On Tuesday evening in Salta, the Primera champions were heading for defeat against Banfield until the Colombian rifled in a last gasp equaliser from 35 yards to force a penalty shootout.
Despite creating plenty of chances, Boca had been unable to cancel out Mauricio Sperduti’s sensational early opener. Goalkeeper Agustin Rossi didn’t appear to think there was much cause for concern when Sperduti stood over a free kick so far from goal but the 31-year-old delivered a perfectly struck effort that whipped over the wall and into the net.
Cristian Pavón, Darío Benedetto and Cardona couldn’t find a way past Mauricio Arboleda until the 95th minute and it took a special strike from the new signing to do so.
As Banfield missed their opening two penalties in the shootout it was left to Fernando Gago to slot in Boca’s fourth and with it seal another preseason win.
