Lower league side Gimnasia y Tiro were probably hoping that Boca Juniors were not quite up to speed with the season not yet started but the Primera champions showed no mercy in Formosa, scoring five and cruising into the Copa Argentina last 32.
Ricardo Centurión may have left the club but Guillermo Barros Schelotto has so far kept the likes of Darío Benedetto and Cristian Pavón and when you add recent signing Edwin Cardona to the mix, Boca are perhaps more formidable than when they lifted the Primera title a couple of months ago.
After threatening early, the deadlock was eventually broken just after the half hour mark when Benedetto slipped in Pavón and the pacy forward rolled the ball across goal for Pablo Pérez to apply the simple finish.
Five minutes later and it was two thanks to the vision and technique of Fernando Gago, who spotted the run of Cardona and with lazer-like accuracy pinged the ball into the Colombian’s path. With one touch, the new number ten was round goalkeeper Mauro Leguiza and with the next, the ball was in the net.
Frank Fabra made it three after half time before last season’s leading scorer Benedetto added two from close range.
Boca will now face Nacional B outfit Guillermo Brown in the last 32.
