It may not have been the five that Boca put past Gimnasia y Tiro but River Plate made almost equally light work of Primera D club Atlas on Tuesday evening to book their place in the Copa Argentina last 32.
A full strength River side, complete with recent signing Enzo Pérez, Javier Pinola and Germán Lux in the starting eleven, were immediately on the attack and in the 13th minute that extra quality told. Lucas Alario chested the ball down to Pity Martínez on the edge of the box and quickly shifting it onto his weaker right foot, the 24-year-old drilled it past Rodolfo De Rosa.
The second seemed only a matter of time and before the break Nacho Fernández nodded in to double the lead. With the result all but confirmed Atlas were able to bring club icon and River fanatic Wilson Severino on for a late cameo but there was still time for Pity Martínez to add a third from the penalty spot.
River will now face Instituto in the last 32.
A little earlier, San Lorenzo made things far more difficult for themselves and less than a week after needing penalties to progress in the Copa Libertadores, Diego Aguirre’s side once again had luck on their side as they eliminated Federal A side Cipolletti.
A lacklustre performance from Los Cuervos saw their lower league opposition give all kinds of problems and it was no real surprise when Jorge Piñero Da Silva headed Cipolletti ahead.
Nicolás Reniero tapped in an equaliser twenty minutes from time but neither side could force a winner within the ninety minutes. Cipolletti drew first blood in the shootout when Nicolás Blandi missed San Lorenzo’s first but two saves by goalkeeper Nicolás Navarro eventually saw Ezequiel Cerutti slot in the winner.
Significant improvements are needed ahead of the start of the season but San Lorenzo face Deportivo Morón in the next round.
San Lorenzo 1 – 1 Cipolletti (4-2 PENS)
River Plate 3 – 0 Atlas
