The line-up for the last 32 isn’t yet complete but such is the organisation of Argentine football that Unión already booked their place in the last 16 with victory over Lanús in Sarandí.
2016 Transición champions Lanús are at the quarter final stage of this year’s Copa Libertadores but will need to lift the title if they are to qualify for next year after seeing another door close in defeat to Unión.
The ever-dangerous Lautaro Acosta created the opening goal for El Granate with a burst down the left that allowed Alejandro Silva a simple tap-in but it was swiftly cancelled out by a fierce, long range effort by Manuel De Iriondo.
With the tie in the balance, Lucas Gamba prodded Unión ahead shortly after the hour mark and El Tatengue held on for the win to set up a clash with either Deportivo Morón or San Lorenzo in the next round.
