Portuguese champions Benfica maintained their perfect start to the season with a third straight win thanks to an emphatic 5-0 thrashing of Belenenses. Brazilian forward Jonas had already put the Águias ahead when Argentina international Eduardo Salvio struck an unstoppable second. A partially cleared corner fell to the former Lanús winger and was swiftly curled into the top corner.

Jonas completed a hat-trick and one for Haris Seferović completed the rout giving Benfica top spot in the Primeira Liga at this early stage.

Over the border in Spain and it was a mixed afternoon for Argentinos.

Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid were heading for opening weekend defeat when they trailed newly promoted Girona 2-0 with ten men, after Antoine Griezmann’s red card. However, Ángel Correa’s stunning strike pulled a goal back with a little over ten minutes remaining before José Giménez headed a late equaliser.

Sevilla also had to make do with a point after Eduardo Berizzo rotated his side for the visit of Espanyol. Éver Banega was introduced shortly after half time to try and win the game but was sent off five minutes from time when disagreeing with the referee.
