Montreal Impact’s fine recent form continued on Saturday with the inspirational Ignacio Piatti at the centre of things once again. The 32-year-old, regularly linked with a move away from Montreal, struck twice during the first half to set his side on the way to a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake.
Piatti’s brace took his season tally to fourteen, level with compatriot Diego Valeri, who was once again on the scoresheet as Portland Timbers defeated New York Red Bulls 2-0.
In Liga MX, Eduardo Coudet eased pressure on himself at Tijuana with a first win of the season. Gustavo Bou scored for the second week running with a powerful near post finish and Ignacio Malcorra smashed in a superb second after exchanging passes with Damián Musto.
Monterrey remained at the top of the table after a 2-1 win away to Club León after Ramiro Funes Mori scored for the second consecutive weekend. Only two minutes were on the clock when the former River Plate striker slotted Los Rayados ahead and in form Dorlan Pabon doubled the lead with a sensational free kick. Mauro Boselli bundled a goal back for León but Antonio Mohamed’s side held on for the points.
And finally, Atlas fell to a third straight defeat but former Chacarita Juniors striker Matías Alustiza scored his fourth goal of the season. The 33-year-old rifled in from distance but it wasn’t enough to prevent Cruz Azul claiming a 2-1 win.
