Atlético Tucumán had looked good value for their Copa Sudamericana victory over Independiente in midweek and took that form into their Superliga opener against Godoy Cruz on Sunday afternoon with another well earned win.
Franco Sbuttoni headed the home side in front after 17 minutes and shortly after a careless attempted clearance by goalkeeper Leonardo Burián allowed David Barbona to run through on goal and square the ball for a simple finish by Luis Rodriguez.
Godoy Cruz had their chances and managed to pull a goal back before the hour mark when Sebastian Olivares hooked the ball into the net after bobbling around the penalty area. However, as the visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Fabrizio Angileri was shown a second yellow card and it made El Decano’s job of holding on for all three points that little bit easier.
Earlier in San Juan, San Martín made a winning start to the season with a 2-0 victory over Patronato.
Facundo Barceló tucked away the opening goal with only three minutes on the clock and after being the better side for the majority of the game when Marcos Gelabert headed a second in the 75th minute it all but sealed the points.
Patronato slip closer to the relegation zone and following on from what was a dreadful 2016/17, El Patrón look in trouble.
