Newell’s Old Boys were dumped out of this year’s Copa Argentina by Godoy Cruz on Monday evening after Santiago García struck in stoppage time.
A Leonel Galeano own-goal had given La Lepra the lead in the Estadio 15 de Abril midway through the first half but Felipe Rodríguez equalised within five minutes.
When Godoy Cruz had Sebastián Olivares sent off with twenty minutes remaining, momentum swung in favour of Newell’s but despite dominating the Rosarinos couldn’t find a second. Instead it was left to García, who avoided the offside trap and slotted the ball under Luciano Pocrnjic in the 91st minute.
El Tomba progress and will now meet Banfield in the next round.
A little earlier in Sarandí, Vélez booked their place in the next round with victory over last season’s Primera relegation victims Aldosivi but needed a controversial 83rd minute winner.
With neither side able to find a breakthrough, second half substitute Maxi Romero appeared to clearly foul Ismael Quilez as the young centre forward kept the ball in play. However, with nothing given Romero was able to square the ball for Federico Andrada to tap in the winner.
After their winning start to the Superliga season, Vélez will now face Huracán in the last 16.
